Project aims to help domestic violence victims reach help more easily

MARQUETTE, MI--   A federal grant is funding new U.P.-wide project to help victims of domestic violence reach out for help.

The Marquette Women’s Center says crisis center Dial Help of Houghton will collaborate with seven domestic abuse shelters and sexual assault programs by providing easy access to services through one area-wide toll free number.  The project will also create regional messaging and advertising through social media.

Planners hope to use easy phone transfers to the crisis line and safe texting options to link victims and survivors to the service program closest to them.

The project is funded by the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board through the federal Rural Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking Grant Program from the Office on Violence against Women.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
