Bankruptcy for DCHS?

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI--   Legal counsel for Dickinson County Healthcare System is recommending the hospital file for bankruptcy.

During a meeting Monday of the hospital Board of Trustees and Dickinson County Commissioners, attorney Michael Celello said he’ll ask the Board for permission to begin the legal pursuit for reorganization. He said attempts at being acquired have fallen short, and reorganization offers the best chance for DCHS to maintain services and staffing.

Hospital officials say an attempt to reduce expenses this year resulted in nearly $5 million in savings over the same time last year. They say financial struggles are due to a decrease in the community’s use of services.

The Board says it will deliberate on the issue.
