Officials still struggling with adenovirus in two U.P. counties

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette County Health Department says there may be some adenovirus still circulating in Delta and Menominee counties.

A cluster of cases involving the flu-like sickness arose in the Central U.P. in August. Some strains can cause more dangerous illness, like pneumonia, especially in those with compromised immune systems.

Local lab testing originally identified cases in Marquette, Delta and Menominee counties, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says right now no cases are confirmed in Marquette County.

The Health Department says, to date, seven cases of adenovirus have been confirmed by the CDC. An additional four cases are suspected. Two people have died, and outpatient testing has identified additional, milder cases.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
