Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday

MARQUETTE, MI--   Residents can help replenish local food pantries by using their mailbox this weekend.

Saturday is the National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. Besides mail, letter carriers will also pick up nonperishable food items left in bags by mailboxes. In Marquette the food will be brought back to the Post Office, divided and sent to St. Vincent DePaul, the Salvation Army, the Harbor House, the Warming Center, and the Janzen House.

Officials say the drive comes at a time when the shelves of food pantries are nearly empty.

Angie LeDuc of the Marquette Post Office reports 15,000 pounds of food was collected in Marquette last year. Since the drive began more than 1.5 billion pounds of food has been collected nationwide.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
