Coronavirus cases identified downstate

LANSING, MI--   Governor Gretchen Whitmer says two Michigan residents have tested positive for the coronavirus.

One is a middle-aged woman from Oakland County who recently traveled internationally. The other is a middle-aged man from Wayne County who traveled domestically. Both are hospitalized and specimens have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm the diagnosis.

The governor has declared a state of emergency to maximize efforts and assist local governments and officials to slow the spread of the virus.

Whitmer and Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun will provide an update on the state’s response to COVID-19 Wednesday morning.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
