Aspirus to lay off workers

WAUSAU, WI--   Aspirus says it must furlough or reduce the work hours of some employees starting May 1 because of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials say the move will primarily impact employees who do not work in direct patient care.

Aspirus President and CEO Matthew Heywood says COVID-19 is reducing business volumes. He says officials had hoped to avoid the changes, but they must be made so the hospital system can continue to serve communities.

Furloughed employees will continue to receive health insurance and other benefits, and they may be recalled to work at any time.
