Positive result reported at Negaunee nursing home

NEGAUNEE, MI--   An employee at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee has tested positive for COVID-19.

The facility says in a post on Facebook that the employee has had no direct contact with residents. The person works in the laundry department.

Officials believe it’s an isolated incident, but won’t know for sure until after extensive testing of all employees and residents concludes. Four employees who worked closely with the infected employee have tested negative.

Testing will be done on a regular basis pending test kit availability and personal protective equipment supply. Eastwood officials say 46 employees have tested negative so far and they’re waiting to get the results of 22 tests.

Most of the facility’s residents will be tested starting Monday, once all consents are received. The home has enough kits to test all residents and 25 additional employees.

More than 230 test kits are expected to arrive Monday or Tuesday from Eastwood’s lab partner NxGen MDx out of Grand Rapids. Officials hope to engage the help of the Michigan National Guard with the testing process.
