Customers can now use tokens at Calumet Farmers Market

CALUMET, MI--   A grant from the Portage Health Foundation will give residents a new way to pay for purchases at the Calumet Farmers Market.

The money will allow the market to offer tokens for customers wishing to use SNAP benefits or credit/debit cards. Customers will visit the Market Table and purchase tokens valued at a dollar each. All vendors will accept the tokens as cash.

Leah Polzien is executive director of Main Street Calumet. She says the new system will make it simpler and more discreet for families to use their benefits at the market, while decreasing the workload on vendors.

The Calumet Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning June 20 on 5th Street.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
