Delta variant spreading in Dickinson County

DICKINSON COUNTY, MI--   Health officials say a fourth case of the COVID-19 Delta variant has been identified in Dickinson County.

Ruth Manier is with the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department. She says that’s concerning because the variant is about 50 percent more transmissible compared to the original virus. It’s also less responsive to current treatment options, like antibody treatments.

Manier adds there are also concerns about protection from vaccinations and natural immunity following a COVID infection, which could mean an increase in reinfection for those who have already contracted the virus. She notes the variant cases have been identified in a younger population.

Manier urges everyone to work together to get vaccinated and adhere to social distancing, mask use, hand hygiene and avoiding large social gatherings.

Anyone interested in vaccinating their 12- to 17-year-old children can call the health department at 906-774-1868.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
