NMU to resume mandatory COVID testing this month

MARQUETTE, MI— As the Omicron variant explodes across the U.S., Northern Michigan University will begin required random COVID testing January 17.

The plan is to test 700 individuals weekly. That includes 150 vaccinated employees and 150 who don’t have proof of vaccination, the same number of students, and 110 student athletes.

Interim President Kerri Schuiling says this level of testing will enable NMU to get a relative sense of the number of COVID cases in the campus community.

Schuiling says if mandatory vaccination or weekly testing is approved by the U.S. Supreme Court, Northern will adjust its testing pool to meet the requirements.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
