Filling backpacks for kids in need during Spring Break

Facebook

HOUGHTON, MI— Several volunteers, including Michigan State Police troopers, moved thousands of pounds of food for the 31 Backpacks organization in Houghton on Monday.

The 6,278 pounds of meals and snacks were transferred from the Houghton Food Bank to Glad Tidings Church in Hancock in preparation for Spring Break. It will be put into backpacks by volunteers and given to children identified as at-risk at local schools.

31 Backpacks provides more than 2,000 meals, almost 1,000 servings of fruit and almost 900 snacks weekly.

This week’s haul is meant to help feed kids for a week away from school.
