Former Department of Community Health director to assess NMU mental health services

MARQUETTE, MI— A comprehensive review of Northern Michigan University’s mental health services will begin this week.

The move comes after a student took their own life on campus earlier this month and another student was suspended for sending everyone a survey about the university’s mental health capabilities.

Interim President Kerri Schuiling has asked Jim Haveman to lead the assessment. Haveman was the director of the Michigan Department of Community Health from 1996 to 2003 and 2012 to 2014. He’s also a former NMU Trustee.

Haveman is studying Northern policies and procedures and will interview students and staff about mental health services. He will provide monthly reports, culminating in a final report in August, which will include recommendations and a comparison of NMU’s programs and processes with current best practices.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
