UPHS-Marquette selects new CEO

MARQUETTE, MI— Tonya Darner has been named the permanent Chief Executive Officer of UPHS-Marquette.

She’s served as the hospital’s interim CEO since November and chief operating officer since 2021.

Darner served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, eventually becoming the 4th Medical Operations Squadron Superintendent in 2007. She took on several leadership roles at UPHS-Marquette and also served as Chief Operating Officer for Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin.

Darner was selected as chief executive officer following the departure of former CEO Gar Atchison in October.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
