Ontonagon hospital to shift to clinic operations

ONTONAGON, MI— Aspirus Health is turning its Ontonagon Hospital into a rural health clinic.

That means hospital and emergency services will be discontinued and replaced with outpatient-only services.

Officials say the hospital serves just one inpatient a day, on average. Some days, there are no inpatients. The administration is working with Ontonagon employees to find new positions in the system.

Meanwhile, Aspirus will spend $30 million to renovate and expand its Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium. Officials say inpatient rooms will be larger and more private, access to orthopedic care will increase, and services will be consolidated to increase patient flow.
