MCHD making naloxone more available to residents

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Marquette County Health Department has partnered with two businesses to increase the public’s access to naloxone.

The FDA-approved medication can reverse an opioid overdose. It’s easy to use, safe, and non-addictive.

Jim’s Jubilee in Ishpeming and the Modeltown Express gas station in Gwinn are collaborating with the health department to allow a naloxone distribution box to be placed at their businesses. The container is a refurbished newspaper box that holds doses of intranasal naloxone. They’re located outside the businesses and the medication is available to anyone in the community, free of charge.

Officials say it’s a discrete option for the public to obtain lifesaving medicine.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
