NMU receives wellbeing award from national magazine

Dr. Angela Stebbins

MARQUETTE, MI— Insight Into Academia magazine has given Northern Michigan University its 2026 Excellence in Mental Health and Well-Being Award.

The honor recognizes an institution’s programs and initiatives that significantly advance core values of student and employee mental health and well-being.

Doctor Angela Stebbins is assistant vice president for Holistic Wellbeing at NMU. She says by signing the Okanagan Charter the university confirmed its commitment to embedding health and well-being into campus culture and leading health promotion through collaboration.

The magazine selected NMU because well-being has been made a campus-wide priority. Multiple departments and campus partners collaborate to support an initiative that promotes the well-being of students, faculty, and staff.

Northern will be featured, along with 37 other recipients, in the September 2026 issue of Insight Into Academia magazine.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
