Groundbreaking held for new MTU wellness center

Architectural rendering of the new Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness

HOUGHTON, MI— Michigan Technological University held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for its new Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness.

The 78,400-square-foot center will bring together wellness services and resources currently spread across more than 30 locations on campus. It will be built between the Memorial Union and Administration Buildings.

Officials say it will advance student emotional, physical, and mental health, with dedicated space for instructional areas, a fitness center, group training rooms, a medical clinic, and outreach and prevention offices.

The project is fully funded by a $55 million gift from alumnus Chang K. Park, who graduated Tech in 1973. The center is expected to open in fall of 2028.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
