Near record-setting travel expected for Memorial Day

UNDATED— AAA predicts nearly 13 million Michiganders will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Memorial Day period.

That’s an increase of 37,000 compared to last year and the second-highest on record.

Officials say 1.2 million residents are expected to travel by automobile, more than 70,000 by plane, and 64,000 through other modes of transportation.

AAA says a trip to the gas pump should be lower than last year. On Memorial Day 2024, the national average for a gallon of regular was $3.59. In Michigan it was $3.66 a gallon. So far this spring, gas prices have avoided the usual seasonal spikes, largely due to lower crude oil costs.
