State already looking for next MI Christmas tree

LANSING, MI— Spring may not have even fully sprung yet, but the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget is already looking for the next state Christmas tree.

Officials say with warmer weather quickly approaching and before the trees fully leaf out, now is the ideal time for Michiganders to spot the perfect tree.

To be considered, the tree must be a spruce or fir, be at least 60 feet tall with a maximum crown of 24 feet and maximum trunk diameter of 30 inches, have easy access to the road, with no interference from wires, and be available at no cost.

The deadline for nominations is August 17. Individuals who would like to nominate a tree are asked to email their name, telephone number, a photograph of the tree, and information about its size and location to www.christmastree@michigan.gov.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
