Michigan State Police collecting 'Purses with a Purpose'

MARQUETTE, MI— To find a donation event near you, visit the MSP’s Community Calendar.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Michigan State Police is bringing back “Purses with a Purpose” to help survivors.

For the entire month, the Wakefield, Iron Mountain and Calumet Posts—among others—will collect new and gently used purses and bags filled with comfort items and toiletries. They’ll be given to local shelters to aid victims who had to leave bad situations and didn’t have time to grab necessities.

The purses can be dropped off at the State Police Posts, or at Incredible Bank in Ironwood, the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, Baraga County Sheriff's Office, Unite Mental Health and Wellness in Houghton, and Dial Help in Houghton.

Needed items include:

Feminine hygiene products

Coloring books
Coloring pencils
T-shirts
Sports bras
Blank journals
Lotions
Hand sanitizer
Socks
Underwear
Scented candles
