Women's Center launches "Nifty 250" fundraiser

MARQUETTE, MI—The Women’s Center of Marquette and Alger Counties is kicking off its month-long “Nifty 250” fundraising campaign with an event at the Drifa Brewing Company in Marquette Wednesday.

The center is encouraging 250 donors to give $250, which pays the costs of a family for a week at the Harbor House.

The number of domestic violence survivors has increased 54 percent over the past year and services for sexual assault therapy and advocacy at the center have increased 108 percent. Officials say government assistance is being cut, and the center wants to rely less on government programs.

The Nifty 250 kickoff event takes place Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Drifa Brewing Company.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
