Governor's Service Awards to honor UP residents, nonprofit

MARQUETTE, MI— Two Upper Peninsula residents and one nonprofit will be honored at the 2023 Governor’s Service Awards at the end of the month.

Since 1994, the event has recognized Michigan volunteers, organizations, and businesses that are committed to service and play a critical role in improving the lives of people and their communities.

The Volunteer of the Year award will be given to Marcia Gonstead of Big Bay. Andrew Rickauer of Marquette is getting the Community Impact Award, as is the Suicide Survivors Fund of Marquette.

The 2023 Governor’s Service Awards will be held November 28th at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
