Ishpeming resident to receive award at 2024 Governor's Service Awards

ISHPEMING, MI— An Ishpeming woman is being honored for her volunteerism.

Lois Westman will be recognized with a National Service Impact Award at the 2024 Governor’s Service Awards in Detroit next month. She has served with the Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti for more than 20 years. During that time, she accrued more than 3,500 hours of service. Westman is involved with the American Legion Auxiliary. She is now a regular member of the ALA Unit 114 and a lifetime member of the AMVETS Auxiliary Post 122.

Westman helps plan, sponsor and execute specialty events at the Home. She also sings and plays music on multiple instruments.

Westman also serves with the Marquette County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program and raised more than $32,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Walk on a team with her sister.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
