Two Habitat homes being built this year at new McClellan Meadows site in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is moving forward on construction of a new housing project in Marquette.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week at the McClellan Meadows site near the Upper Peninsula Medical Center. Habitat Community Programs Director Henry Morley says the site is perfect for Habitat homes.

“Because, as a community, we continue to need affordable housing, but also housing that has a walkability and is located closer to employers.”

Habitat will build seven affordable, single-family homes. “Affordable” means
30 percent or less of the homeowner’s monthly income will go towards housing. Those who get the homes have to put in 250 hours of “sweat equity,” and the rest of the cost is subsidized.

Morley says a good chunk of the units have already been matched to future homebuyers. Two foundations will be constructed this year, and the project will continue next summer.

More information about applying for a home is at www.mqthabitat.org.
