HOUGHTON AND MARQUETTE, MI— Two Upper Peninsula organizations are seeking people to volunteer for free tax preparation programs.

Eligible residents can file their taxes at no cost during the upcoming tax season with Michigan Tech’s College of Business and the United Way of Marquette County. But demand continues to outpace available volunteers.

No prior experience is needed. Free training and IRS certification are provided. Those interested can register and learn more at www.michiganfreetaxhelp.org/volunteer.

During the 2026 filing season, Michigan’s free tax prep programs helped more than 90,000 households claim $153.8 million in state and federal refunds while saving approximately $28.5 million in tax preparation fees.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
