UPDATE: Thousands of UP residents without power due to high winds

UPDATE, 4 p.m.— Utility crews across the Upper Peninsula continue to work on restoring power to thousands of customers.

High winds gusting up to 60 mph Thursday blew down trees and branches, snapping power lines.

Electric utilities reported the following number of outages as of 4 p.m. EST Thursday:

Marquette Board of Light and Power—6

UPPCO—2,813

Cloverland—8,948

WE Energies—4,580

Wisconsin Public Service—1,205

Alger-Delta—571

Excel—27

There’s no timeline for when power might be restored.

MARQUETTE, MI— High winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour have electric utilities across the Upper Peninsula scrambling to restore power to residents.

As of 7 a.m. Thursday 3,958 UPPCO customers had no electricity; 3,948 Cloverland Electric Cooperative customers were in the dark; 29 homes were without power on the Marquette Board of Light and Power grid; 795 customers with the Alger-Delta Cooperative Electric Association had no electricity; and 2,811 WE Energies homes had no power.

Winds are expected to decrease over most of the U.P. by early Thursday afternoon, but they will keep steady through about 11 p.m. over the Keweenaw.

Officials caution residents never to touch downed power lines.
