Rain produces flooding in Houghton County

Veronica R.

HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI— Houghton County is dealing with areas of flooding and resulting damage.

A flash flood warning was issued Wednesday morning for the county and rain returned in the afternoon.

There are numerous reports of water over US-41 in Chassell. It also flowed onto Lakeshore Drive, canceling a number of activities in Chassell Township.

Rain produced a washout on Misery Bay Road near Toivola and a portion of M-26 slid into a ravine at Huron Creek in Houghton. Two lanes of the road will be closed for a week or more until repairs can be made to the storm sewer and nearby culvert.

The National Weather Service said several areas received more than three inches of rain in a short period of time.
