NWS seeking input on possible discontinuation of UP state forecast

MARQUETTE, MI— The National Weather Service is considering terminating its state forecast product at the Marquette office.

The forecast is broad, covering the entire Upper Peninsula.

Ryan Metzger is meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service Office in Marquette. He says the NWS periodically evaluates services to look for redundancies and lesser-used products.

“So, the state forecast product is… basically there’s other products that basically cover the same information that are more detailed and are more widely used by the public.”

For instance, the NWS offers a point-and-click two-and-a-half by two-and-a-half-kilometer forecast and zone forecasts that cover individual counties.

The NWS Headquarters is seeking public comment on the possible discontinuation of the state forecast through February 9. Those who wish to provide feedback can email public.program@noaa.gov

Metzger notes the NWS office in Marquette will continue to be staffed 24/7, no matter if the state forecast goes away.
