MARQUETTE, MI— Frigid temperatures have prompted Noquemanon Ski Marathon officials to delay 50K wave start times by one hour on Saturday.
The race committee says temperatures at 9 a.m. at the 50K start line are anticipated to be at the race’s prior established threshold of 13 degrees below zero with a wind chill of -24. The ambient temperature is expected to improve to -10 by 10 a.m. Officials say those later temperatures are within the protocol set for Saturday events.
Because of low temperatures, the race committee has instituted specific cutoff times at each aid station, up to Aid Station #6 at Forestville. The cutoffs will be hard stops, and competitors who arrive after the designated times will not be allowed to continue further on the course.
The decision follows the cancelation of Friday’s Adaptive and Junior Noque races due to plunging wind chills.
