Squirrel caused Wednesday night power outage, MBLP says

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette Board of Light and Power says wildlife is to blame for a widespread power outage in Marquette Wednesday night.

Officials say a squirrel got into an electrical distribution substation. That caused the entire substation to trip offline and cut power to customers.

MBLP personnel were dispatched to isolate the affected equipment and re-energize the portions of the system that were lost.

Roughly 3,600 customers were without electricity for 1.5 hours.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
