EGLE grants aim to increase drinking water quality

MARQUETTE, MI— Two U.P. municipalities are getting state grants to ensure clean and reliable drinking water.

The money comes through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s Drinking Water Asset Management grant program.

Ishpeming is getting $663,000 for water system enhancement. City Manager Craig Cugini says there’s about $15 million worth of lead service line replacement needed. The grant will help officials verify the estimate and plan for the programming of funds.

And Forsyth Township is getting $342,000 for water system enhancement through Distribution System Materials Inventory development and Asset Management Plan updates.

The grants were announced last week.
