Abandoned mine shaft creates sinkhole in Ishpeming

ISHPEMING, MI— A sinkhole has appeared on an Ishpeming street, prompting officials to close it off.

City officials say fill material in an abandoned mine shaft shifted Thursday, causing a part of Bluff Street to open up.

No one was injured and no utilities were disrupted.

A portion of Bluff, including the intersection with Jasper Street and about 200 yards east, is closed for public safety. The city is urging unauthorized personnel to stay away from the site until further notice.
