ST. IGNACE, MI— Work on the Mackinac Bridge is set to start later this month.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority says the two-season project to repave portions of the bridge’s north viaduct and approach truss spans will begin March 24.
To ensure the work is completed prior to the seasonal rise in traffic volumes on the bridge, the scope of work has been reduced with the goal of reopening all lanes of the bridge before Memorial Day weekend.
From March 24 to April 26, crews will replace a modular joint over Pier 34 at the start of the north viaduct span, then repair and repave the southbound lanes of the north viaduct. During this time, the southbound side of the bridge will be closed with one lane open in each direction on the northbound side of the bridge.
From April 28 to May 22, crews will close the northbound side of the bridge while the other half of the modular joint is replaced. One lane will be open in each direction on the southbound side of the bridge.
