ST. IGNACE, MI— The Mackinac Bridge faces possible closure over the next few days due to falling ice.
The Bridge Authority says despite recent closures, some ice still remains on the upper cables and towers of the span. Winds are expected to begin increasing Friday in the Straits, and temperatures are predicted to rise above freezing after 11 a.m., which could loosen accumulated ice.
Bridge Director Kim Nowack says the ice could gradually melt or it could fall, but it’s impossible to tell when. This winter the bridge has already closed for falling ice four times between February 19 and 22.
Ice chunks, sheets and spears that fall hundreds of feet from the bridge's towers and cables have damaged vehicles and have the potential to injure or kill vehicle occupants.
