Ishpeming residents asked to direct sump pump water outside or into storm sewer

City of Ishpeming

ISHPEMING, MI— The City of Ishpeming is asking residents whose sump pumps are discharging into the sanitary sewer to redirect them outside.

Officials say the wastewater treatment plant is running at full capacity, which has created an increase in water and sewer backups. Discharging sumps into the sanitary sewer adds a significant amount of extra water for the plant to treat, especially during wet conditions.

City officials say they understand how frustrating and disruptive this can be and they're actively working on solutions, but by making this adjustment, residents can reduce the risk of backups for themselves and their neighbors.
