Anchor drop temporarily closes Poe Lock

Freighter American Century

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Poe Lock in Sault Ste. Marie is back open, after a 1,000-foot freighter dropped anchor within it.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the American Century dropped its anchor around 1 p.m. Wednesday. The lock was closed while U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes investigated the incident and inspected the lock for damage. None was found.

The freighter was backed out of the Poe Lock and moored on the pier. Other vessels lined up during the investigation, until the Poe Lock reopened around 6 p.m.
