Stairways, trail structures along Black River to be repaired and replaced starting Monday

IRONWOOD, MI— The Ottawa National Forest is refurbishing infrastructure along the Black River corridor in Ironwood starting Monday.

Visitors should expect temporary closures as crews repair and replace waterfall viewing platforms, stairways, and trail structures. Officials say the work will improve safety, enhance accessibility, protect natural resources, and make the infrastructure more resilient.

Work at Sandstone Falls begins Monday. Construction projects on Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, and Rainbow Falls will close portions of the trail later this summer.

The work supports the Forest Service’s effort to modernize recreation facilities, reduce maintenance backlogs, and restore safety across high‑use sites on the forest.
