Keweenaw sheriff to retire

mininggazette.com

EAGLE RIVER, MI--   Keweenaw County’s sheriff is stepping down from his post after 24 years.

Ron Lahti has spent the past 37 years in law enforcement.  He served six terms as sheriff—the longest-serving sheriff in the county’s history.

The Keweenaw County Jail will close when Lahti retires at the end of the year.  He says there simply aren’t enough inmates to keep it open.  Future inmates will be sent to the Houghton County Jail.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
