State Police safely secure suicidal man at Tahquamenon Falls

TAHQUAMENON FALLS STATE PARK, MI--   On 3/29/19, approximately 9:45 am, Chippewa County Central Dispatch received a 911 call from a 24-year-old, male subject advising he was at the Upper Tahquamenon Falls State Park, armed with a firearm, and contemplating suicide.

Michigan State Police, assisted by Luce County Sheriff Department, Chippewa County Sheriff  Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and U.S. Border Patrol responded to the scene.

Chippewa County Central Dispatch kept in contact with the subject while law enforcement secured the
scene. After several hours of negotiations, the subject agreed to turn himself over to authorities. He
was taken into custody without incident. A firearm was located in his vehicle and seized.
 
The subject was subsequently transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Sections of M-123, near the upper falls were closed temporarily and employees of the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub were secured inside the establishment until the incident was resolved.
 
The incident remains under investigation.
