Student takes his own life at Aspen Ridge School

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, MI— Michigan State Police are investigating an incident involving a student with a firearm at Aspen Ridge School in Ishpeming Township Tuesday.

Around 12:30 p-m a trooper was giving a presentation to students when he was called to a different part of the school. Officials found a lone boy inside a bathroom with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They rendered first aid as additional patrol units and EMS responded. The juvenile was taken to UPHS-Marquette, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Aspen Ridge was put on lockdown as law enforcement cleared the building and began an investigation. Officers say it was an isolated incident involving one student, and there was no threat to other students or the public.

State Police will continue to investigate the incident. The name of the boy will not be released.

Classes in the NICE Community Schools district are canceled Wednesday.

Troopers were assisted by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Ishpeming Township Police Department, and local EMS.
