Houghton Police receive accreditation

HOUGHTON, MI— The Houghton Police Department has become the second accredited law enforcement agency in the Upper Peninsula.

The department requested to undergo the process, which proves an agency’s commitment to public safety and professionalism in policing.

Accreditation takes several years to complete, and every officer participates. Law enforcement must complete a checklist of nearly 800 tasks before bringing in the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police to evaluate the department and its processes. Officials say accreditation is a promise by the police department to its residents to uphold themselves to the highest professional standards.

The Houghton Police Department will be reevaluated for reaccreditation in three years.
