Fatal Escanaba fire human-caused, police say

ESCANABA, MI— An Escanaba fire that killed one person in January appears to have been caused by a human.

Department of Public Safety Officers reviewed video footage of the night of the fire, witness statements, and the fire scene investigation itself. They say the fire came from the rear side of Trinkets and Treasures in its beginning stages. Investigators also determined the fire originated on the second story of the structure.

Officials say there were no indications the ignition source was from mechanical malfunction, like electricity, heat, or gas. The fire appears to have originated from human introduction of the ignition source to flammable material.

Police have not indicated if they have any suspects in the incident.
