Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility resident takes his own life, police investigate

MANISTIQUE, MI— The Manistique Public Safety Department is investigating a suicide at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility.

Monday around 6:10 a.m., Public Safety officers and Manistique EMS were dispatched to the facility for a possible life-threatening situation. The officer who arrived at the scene was immediately briefed by staff. It was determined there was no risk to staff, SMCF residents, or the general public.

The response transitioned into a police investigation to find out what happened.

Officers found that a facility resident had taken his own life, with no intent to harm anyone else. No foul play is suspected.

The incident remains under investigation.

The staff and administration of the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility are being praised for their quick and professional handling of the situation.

The Manistique Public Safety Department was assisted by the Michigan State Police and the Eastern Upper Peninsula Crisis Response Team.
