Marinette County officials investigating death of jail inmate

MARINETTE, WI— An inmate died at the Marinette County Jail last week.

Tuesday around 7:40 p.m., correctional officers were alerted to a medical emergency in one of the cell pods.

Officers immediately responded and began lifesaving efforts. Aurora Medical Center-Bay EMS and the Marinette Emergency Rescue Squad were called in to assist.

Sheriff Randy Miller says all attempts to resuscitate the inmate—identified as Kristi Meverden, 34, of Pound, Wisconsin—were unsuccessful.

The incident remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office. The matter will also be reviewed by the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections Office of Detention Facilities.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
