NEGAUNEE, MI— The Michigan State Police has honored a former dispatcher with the Negaunee Regional Communications Center for his actions during an emergency in Houghton last year.

On December 21, Tyler Woodke answered a 911 call from a woman whose husband was having a heart attack. Remaining calm, Woodke initiated the emergency response and gave the woman CPR instructions over the phone.

The caller performed CPR for several minutes before a trooper arrived at the scene with an AED.

Within 12 minutes of the original call, the victim was reported to be breathing and had a pulse. Officials say that outcome may not have been possible without Woodke’s composed and timely response.

Woodke was presented with a Professional Excellence Award by MSP Regional Communications Center Unit Manager Jonathon Whitford.

Although no longer serving as an emergency dispatcher, Woodke continues his dedication to public service and is currently attending Northern Michigan University’s Police Academy as he pursues a career in law enforcement.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
