BARAGA, MI— The Michigan Department of Corrections has named an officer at the Baraga Correctional Facility the 2026 Officer of the Year.

Joseph Perala has been a CO in the Upper Peninsula for 19 years. MDOC Director Heidi Washington says Perala exemplifies professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to safety. She says he responds decisively during critical incidents and continually seeks out additional training to strengthen facility safety.

Perala played an important role in the Incentives in the Segregation Program pilot at Alger Correctional Facility. The program helps incarcerated individuals transition more successfully from segregation back to the general population. He has also been a dedicated contributor to the MDOC Mentorship Program, helping develop countless new corrections officers.

Perala will officially receive the award at the 2026 MDOC Employee Appreciation Banquet on May 7.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
