MI National Guard to train near Witch Lake starting Friday

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Michigan National Guard is conducting training exercises in Marquette County this week.

Soldiers from the 1431 Engineer Company in Calumet will train beginning Friday at Horseshoe Lake, south of Republic. Exercises will take place through Monday in and around a former Department of Natural Resources campground at Horseshoe Lake, west of M-95 and the community of Witch Lake.

Officials urge visitors to use caution in the area.

The guard will use the Horseshoe Lake boating access site, but it will remain open for public recreation. The DNR says military use of the area will not conflict with civilian traffic on Horseshoe Lake Road.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
