MING, emergency officials to hold evacuation exercises from Mackinac Island

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI— The Michigan National Guard and Mackinac County Office of Emergency Management are participating in a simulated mass evacuation of Mackinac Island Thursday and Friday.

Exercises will take place from the Mackinac County Airport to British Landing. The 1437th Engineer Company out of Sault Ste. Marie will build an alternate port for evacuation of Mackinac Island during a pretend emergency.

Aircraft and boats participating in the exercise will traverse the waters between the Mackinac County Airport and British Landing Thursday between noon and 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be some traffic pauses at the end of the Mackinac County Airport on the I-75 Business spur while the bridging bays are flown to British Landing. The public is asked to avoid the safety zone that will be in place and to be aware of potential travel delays.
