Coast Guard giving Sector Sault Ste. Marie a different name

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie is getting a new name.

Starting Friday, it will be known as Sector Northern Great Lakes.

Coast Guard officials say renaming the sector emphasizes its area of responsibility. The command is on the St. Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It’s the operational and administrative commander of 11 subordinate field units, which include 8 multi-mission small boat stations, one marine safety unit, and two aids-to-navigation teams.

The sector is the home of Vessel Traffic Service St. Marys River and Operation Taconite, the Coast Guard’s largest domestic icebreaking operation.

The sector’s geographic area encompasses all of Lake Superior, northern sections of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as all surrounding navigable waterways.
