Palmer soldier finally to be laid to rest

ARLINGTON, VA— The remains of an Upper Peninsula soldier who died in Korea will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery next week.

Army Corporal Gordon McCarthy, 20, of Palmer was reported missing in action on December 2nd, 1950. His unit was attacked by enemy forces near the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea, but his body could not be recovered.

McCarthy’s remains were returned by North Korea in 2018. He was identified using circumstantial evidence and DNA analysis.

McCarthy will be laid to rest December 14th.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
